What industry are you in?
Understanding Industry Categories
We use the NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) — the official industry classification system used by Statistics Canada. Industries are organized in a 5-level hierarchy that narrows from broad categories to specific industries.
You can search for any industry name at any level (we'll find it even if it's nested deep), or browse by navigating through the hierarchy levels above.
Search by industry name or NAICS code, or browse categories below.
Some industries may appear grayed out because Statistics Canada doesn't provide benchmark data for those specific categories. Try searching for a more specific industry or browse into subcategories to find industries with available data.

About This Data
These insights are based on actual financial statements from Canadian businesses in your industry. The data includes revenue ranges, expense breakdowns, and profitability rates.

Revenue Distribution by Quartiles
This chart shows revenue thresholds (cutoff points) for each quartile, calculated separately for each business type. Quartiles divide businesses into four equal groups (25% each) based on revenue.
Why might "All Businesses" appear shorter? "All Businesses" includes both small unincorporated and larger incorporated businesses. Because it includes smaller businesses, the quartile thresholds are calculated from this mixed population and may be lower than thresholds for "Incorporated" businesses alone.

How to read the benchmarks
Percentages: All percentages are "of revenue" (e.g., 25% = $25,000 of $100,000 revenue).
Your Quartile Average: We compare you to businesses in your same revenue quartile (Bottom 25%, Lower Middle 25%, Upper Middle 25%, or Top 25%). This gives you a more relevant comparison than the overall industry average, as businesses in similar revenue ranges often have similar cost structures.
Top 25% by Revenue: What the highest-earning businesses spend. They may spend more on growth expenses (marketing, professional services) or less on cost of goods if more efficient.
Tip: Find expense amounts on your P&L statement or income statement.
